On Sunday night Natalie became the first graduate of Harvard College to win an Academy Award for best actress. Professors who knew Natalie during her time in college share their stories in the article below. Thanks to The Harvard Crimson.

Former Harvard Psychology Professor and Dean of the Social Sciences Stephen M. Kosslyn worked with Portman when she was a research assistant in his lab. Eight years later, Kosslyn—who recently moved to Stanford—can see a connection between Portman’s academic persistence and her industry success.

“It was very clear when she was a student that she is a very determined person and capable of focused effort over a sustained period,” he said in a statement via e-mail. “She is now demonstrating the results of that determination and focus.”

Law School Professor Alan M. Dershowitz also considered Portman an exceptional student.

“She was in my seminar called Neuropsychology and the Law, and I didn’t know who she was because her name was Natalie Hershlag,” he said, referring to Portman’s birth name. “It was a few weeks into the semester that I learned she was an actress—but she was a terrific student.”

Natalie chatted with journalists in the press room after winning her Best Actress award last night. Many questions were directed toward her pregnancy. Here are some things she said – thanks to BuzzSugar!

On her post-win haze: “It feels very very dream-like right now. I don’t really know where I am I suppose.”

On whether she’d consider naming her baby Oscar: “I think that’s probably, definitely, out of the question.”

On how the baby reacted to her win: “I couldn’t tell you. I don’t really remember anything that happened just now. But the baby was definitely kicking a lot during the song portion of the show. Little dancer.”

On her interpretation of the movie: “Well, I think that one of the most beautiful things about the film is that it can be interpreted in so many different ways. I really see it as this young woman’s coming of age and that she becomes a woman. She starts out a girl and becomes a woman. By finding her own artistic voice and sort of killing the child version of herself, she becomes a woman. I don’t see it necessarily as a death at the end like many people do.”

On what she expects from motherhood: “It’s one of the most exciting things about being pregnant is that I’m accepting complete unknown. It’s a complete mystery and miracle. It’s really just accepting that I have no idea, which is what all of us live every day.”

This is what we all were waiting and hoping for, and this is a huge thing for Natalie and all her fans. It is Natalie’s first win in two nominations and follows her supporting actress nomination for “Closer,” which was made in 2004. Here’s what Natalie said in her speech:

Thank you. Thank you so much. This is insane! I truly and sincerely wish that the prize tonight was to get to work with my fellow nominees… I want to thank Luc Besson, who gave me my first job [in 'The Professional'], ['Closer' director] Mike Nichols, who has been my hero. And to everyone who’s ever hired me!… Darren Aronofsky, you are a visionary. I am so blessed to have gotten to work for you… I want to thank my parents for giving me the opportunity to work from such an early age. My beautiful love, Benjamin, who has now given me my most important role of my life. Most importantly, my family, my friends, and my love, thank you so much.
